Werder Bremen successful in doubles
Werder Bremen remains the fearful opponent of TSV Bad Königshofen in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). The Hanseatic League decided the match in Unterfranken with a narrow 3:2 in their favor.
It was the most contested match of this weekend and so far the only pairing of the first matchday of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) in which the doubles were challenged. After the close defeat of Martin Allegro from Bad Königshofen, who lost 2:3 (4:11, 11:4, 6:11, 11:4, 11:13) to Kirill Gerassimenko, Filip Zeljko achieved the biggest surprise on the side of TSV Bad Königshofen. The Croatian defeated the newly crowned European doubles champion and European bronze medalist in singles, Mattias Falck, clearly and distinctly with 3:0 (11:7, 11:2, 13:11). It was the first defeat for Werder Bremen's Falck against Bad Königshofen. "I was very focused and played tactically well," Filip Zeljko explained his victory. "However, if I could, I would trade my individual victory for a win for my team."
Bremen decides the doubles for itself
Although Bastian Steger contributed the point in a 3-0 (13:11, 12:10, 11:4) win over Marcelo Aguirre to give the home side a 2-1 lead, it was the Bremen team's turn after that. Mattias Falck made up for his defeat in the first match, defeated Martin Allegro 3:1 (11:9, 12:14, 11:4, 11:8) and ensured that it came to the match-deciding doubles. And the Northern Germans also decided this in their favor. Kirill Gerassimenko/Cristian Pletea defeated Bastian Steger/Kilian Ort 3:1 (8:11, 11:7, 12:10, 11:7) and ensured Bremen's away victory.
Bremen's Cristian Pletea was happy about the success: "The victory feels great. I came back after a leg injury and it's great to win with this club."
Bad Königshofens Martin Allegro understandably did not feel good after his two defeats. "I am very sad to have lost to Gerassimenko in the deciding set with 11:13. Filip played incredibly well, Basti did a good job against Aguirre and I had a chance to finish the match. But Falck was a bit too strong this time."
