Victory in Grenzau: Mühlhausen evens out its record
Second win in a row for Post SV Mühlhausen in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL): Six days after the success against Grünwettersbach, the Thuringians also won 3:1 against TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau and thus evened their points tally.
Bit by bit, Post SV Mühlhausen is currently working its way up the table in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). Last year's third-placed team won two games in a row for the first time this season with a 3:1 victory over TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau and is also looking at a balanced points account for the first time with 8:8 points. "Grenzau is a completely different team than last year. They have strengthened very well," noted Mühlhausen's Steffen Mengel after the match. "We therefore knew it would be a tough game - and are all the happier to have won 3:1."
Grenzau, on the other hand, has dropped to 11th place for the time being and is currently ranked behind TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell (4:10) and ahead of 1. FSV Mainz 05 (2:12) with 4:12 points. Fulda will meet Borussia Düsseldorf on Sunday, Mainz will play TTC Neu-Ulm on Saturday.
Mengel defeats Kubik in the 5th set
Steffen Mengel was the match winner on Friday, as he had been six days earlier against Grünwettersbach. And once again he had to work hard: The duel with Maciej Kubik remained contested until the last ball, finally Mengel managed the decisive point for 3:2 (8:11, 11:4, 11:7, 7:11, 11:9) and thus the equalizer for Mulhouse. Patrick Baum had decided the opening singles against Daniel Habesohn with 3:0 (11:8, 12:10, 11:7) for Grenzau. "The second singles was the crux. From that point on, we didn't really have a chance anymore," Grenzau coach Slobodan Grujic stated after the match.
After Mengel's performance, Ovidiu Ionescu gave the guests their 1st lead with a 3:1 (11:5, 11:5, 4:11, 11:7) win over Feng Yi-Hsin. "'Ovi' showed probably his best performance of the season and played great," Mengel said. "I took the momentum with me afterwards." That's because the 34-year-old went on to win his second singles match as well. He conceded just 13 points to Patrick Baum, and his 3-0 (11:6, 11:1, 11:6) victory made Mühlhausen's 4th win of the season perfect.
