Victory against Grünwettersbach: Düsseldorf outshines the competition

Fourth match, fourth victory for Borussia Düsseldorf: The record champion of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) also beat ASV Grünwettersbach 3-0 on Monday evening and goes into the World Cup break with a clean slate.

In the previous season, Borussia Düsseldorf had already achieved an almost unbelievable record of 8:0 points and 12:1 matches after four games in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). In the new season, the record champion has now topped this performance once again. On Monday evening, Düsseldorf also defeated ASV Grünwettersbach 3-0, thus laying down the fourth perfect game in a row and now standing at 8-0 points and 12-0 games. Before the Badeners, Borussia had already defeated Mühlhausen, Mainz and Bremen with 3:0 each. Due to the defeat of TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen on Sunday (1:3 against 1. FSV Mainz 05), the Düsseldorf team now has a small points cushion on second place for the first time this season.

Kay Stumper was responsible for the comeback of the evening. The 19-year-old was first trailing 0:6 in the third set against Wang Xi, then 4:8. The Grünwettersbacher seemed to be on his way to a 2:1 set lead and possibly the 1:2 tie for the guests. Stumper, however, scored point after point, did not let Wang's time-out at 7:8 stop him and finally won the set 11:8. A few minutes later, Stumper celebrated his 3:1 (5:11, 11:8, 11:8, 11:9) victory and thus the fourth win in the fourth singles for Borussia.

Kay Stumper breathes a sigh of relief after win against Wang Xi

"The victory feels very good, my match against Wang Xi was one of the most difficult matches in recent years, both on a mental and playing level," Stumper stated afterwards. "I went into the match with little confidence due to my weaker performances last week and a bit physically battered to boot. But Danny Heister was able to motivate me well and help me to win with his advice." Before Stumpers victory, Dang Qiu had earned a 3:2 (10:12, 11:9, 10:12, 11:2, 11:8) win over Deni Kozul and Anton Källberg a 3:0 (13:11, 11:6, 12:10) win over Ricardo Walther.

Grünwettersbach thus hoped in vain for a surprise and the second win of the season after the 3:2 against 1. FSV Mainz 05. "We had definitely hoped to be able to take points from Düsseldorf today," said Ricardo Walther after returning to his former club. The 30-year-old had played for Düsseldorf from 2019 to 2021 and won the championship, the cup and the Champions League once each with Borussia. "We knew it would be difficult, and the additional absence of Tiago Apolonia further complicated our task. Borussia played strongly, we fought well and risked everything, unfortunately it was not enough in the end. However, the course of the game was tighter than the results suggest."

For both teams, the German Table Tennis Cup continues later in the week: on Thursday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m., Düsseldorf will fight for a place in the quarterfinals at second-league team TV 1879 Hilpoltstein, while Grünwettersbach will host 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday, September 24, at 7 p.m. The TTBL will then continue from November 6.
