TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen vs. Borussia Düsseldorf: Five legendary duels

In the Liebherr TTBL final, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and Borussia Düsseldorf will battle it out for the championship in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) on June 15. The two teams have already played great matches in the past, with dramatic victories and bitter defeats. We take a look back at five legendary duels between Ochsenhausen and Düsseldorf.
Cup final 1996: Borussia Düsseldorf - TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen 4:1
In the 1995/96 season, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen stretched out their hands for titles for the first time in almost forty years of club history. While it worked out in the ETTU Cup with a triumph in the final against TSV Maxell-Sontheim, the Swabians lost out in the final of the German Table Tennis Cup. Although Ma Wenge took the lead against Christian Dreher (2:1), the other matches went to Düsseldorf's Jörg Roßkopf (2:0 against Richard Prause, 2:1 against Ma) and Vladimir Samsonov (2:1 against Peter Franz) as well as Roßkopf/Samsonov (2:0 against Franz/Ma). On the contrary: in the following season, Ochsenhausen repeated their triumph in the ETTU Cup and celebrated the German Championship for the first time with the team of Jörgen Persson, Peter Franz, Dmitri Masunov, Kostadin Lengerov and Gerd Richter. In 2002, they also won the German Table Tennis Cup for the first time.
Champions League final 2009: TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen - Borussia Düsseldorf 0:3
In 2000, Düsseldorf won the Champions League title for the first time, nine years later Borussia celebrated their second triumph. However, they had to stretch themselves mightily against Ochsenhausen: In the first leg, the TTF triumphed 3:2 thanks to the individual victories of Chuang Chih Yuan (2) and Adrian Crisan. The return match seven days later, on May 17, 2009, was then clearly won by Borussia. Dimitrij Ovtcharov (3:1 against Chuang), Timo Boll (3:1 against Crisan) and Christian Süß (3:1 against Apolonia) secured the title for Düsseldorf. Incidentally, the same final was also played in the TTBL at the time, with Düsseldorf winning both the first leg (3:0) and the second leg (3:2).
Champions League semi-final 2018: TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen - Borussia Düsseldorf 2:3
5:5 games, 22:22 sets - the match between Ochsenhausen and Düsseldorf in the semi-finals of the Champions League could hardly have been more dramatic. Ochsenhausen won the first leg 3:2, Düsseldorf struck back with the same result in the second leg. In the end, the points tipped the scales in Borussia's favor with 413 compared to 390. In the final, Timo Boll, Kristian Karlsson, Anton Källberg and Stefan Fegerl finally brought the Champions League trophy to Düsseldorf for the fifth time with two wins against Fakel Gazprom Orenburg (3:2, 3:1).
TTBL main round 2019, matchday 18: Borussia Düsseldorf - TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen 2:3
The TTF were almost unstoppable in the 2018/19 season. After the Swabians had already secured the German Table Tennis Cup, they finally also celebrated in the TTBL with a 3:0 in the Liebherr TTBL final against 1. FC Saarbrücken TT. A milestone on the way there was the 3:2 on the third-last main round matchday in Düsseldorf. Hugo Calderano (3:1 against Omar Assar, 3:2 against Timo Boll) and the doubles team of Simon Gauzy/Stefan Fegerl (3:2 against Kristian Karlsson/Anton Källberg) secured the points for the TTF; Boll (3:1 against Gauzy) and Karlsson (3:2 against Fegerl) scored for Borussia. The victory against the runner-up was a milestone on the way to winning the main round.
TTBL play-off semi-final 2020: Borussia Düsseldorf - TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen 2:3
In the TTBL semi-finals on June 11, 2020, Düsseldorf already looked like the sure winner. Timo Boll (3:0 against Simon Gauzy) and Kristian Karlsson (3:1 against Hugo Calderano) gave Borussia a comfortable lead. But Ochsenhausen struck back: Jakub Dyjas (3:2 against Anton Källberg), Calderano (3:2 against Boll) and Gauzy (3:0 against Karlsson) took the defending champions to the Liebherr TTBL final after all. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the semi-final was not played as a best-of-three - as is usually the case - and a fifth singles match was played instead of the doubles due to contact restrictions. However, the title ultimately did not go to Ochsenhausen, but to 1. FC Saarbrücken TT, who secured the championship for the first time with a 3:1 win against TTF in the final.
