Surprising success: Bad Königshofen celebrates third win of the season
TSV Bad Königshofen caused a big surprise on the sixth matchday of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) on Sunday afternoon. They defeated the favorites, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen, 3:1. One player in particular emerged as the man of the match, who few had expected.
When the last rally was played, Bastian Steger raised both arms in the air. There were hardly any spectators in the stands of the Shakehands Arena. Steger had just defeated Frenchman Simon Gauzy 3:0 to secure a 3:1 victory for his TSV Bad Königshofen against TTF Lieberherr Ochsenhausen on the sixth matchday of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). The team from Lower Franconia made a big statement against the favorites from Ochsenhausen.
Steger was instrumental in the success with two victories. He won his first match against Can Akkuzu - this time 3:1. Steger needed about one and a half sets to get into the match. He lost the first set 6:11 and trailed 4:6 in the second after leading 4:2. However, Steger equalized with seven points in a row and then also won the third and fourth sets to put the hosts ahead.
Martin Allegro brings the decision
However, it was Martin Allegro who decided the match after the break. Going into the match as the underdog against Alvaro Robles, he initially won the first set. However, Robles then seemed to get better and better into the match. He evened the score at 1:1 in the sets and swept Allegro off the table with 11:0 in the third. But to the surprise of many, Allegro was not yet beaten. He fought his way into the decisive fifth set, in which Robles initially refused to be shaken off. But at 7:5, Allegro scored three points in a row, earned five match points and used the second to give Bad Königshofen a 2:1 lead.
Bastian Steger then provided the final point with the clearest game of the day. But this almost wasn't necessary. Filip Zeljko also put in a strong performance against Simon Gauzy, but ultimately lost in the fifth set. The third set was decisive here. Zeljko let a 7:1 lead slip away. However, after the surprise win against the guests from Ochsenhausen was wrapped up, Zeljko should have quickly come to terms with his defeat.
In the late afternoon, Post SV Mühlhausen will host Borussia Düsseldorf before the sixth matchday concludes on Monday with the clash between TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau and SV Werder Bremen.
