Stumper in London taxi accident with “luck in misfortune”

Following his taxi accident on the sidelines of the WTT tournament in London, German table tennis champion Kay Stumper is expected to make his comeback with Bundesliga club Post SV Mühlhausen in the middle of next month. This was announced by Mühlhausen's coach Erik Schreyer.

“We were naturally quite shocked at first, but Kay was very fortunate in his misfortune. After his return home, our doctors fortunately diagnosed only a few muscular problems, so Kay should be available for our important November matches,” Schreyer explained: “If he had been sitting in the passenger seat and not asleep behind the driver, it might not have ended so well.”

Last weekend, after his quarterfinal exit at the $300,000 Star Contender tournament in the English capital, Stumper wanted to take a taxi to the airport. However, in the hectic traffic, a bus rammed into the side of the national player's vehicle.

Due to the crash and the subsequent investigations, Stumper missed his return flight to Germany and thus also his appearance in the league match at 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT. Without the former Düsseldorf player, who had won 3-2 against veteran Dimitrij Ovtcharov and lost 0-3 to eventual tournament winner Dang Qiu in German duels on the island, the Thuringians lost 0-3 last Sunday.

Mühlhausen has a groundbreaking schedule to cope with in November. In addition to three TTBL matches, Stumper's team will face Czech representative HB Ostrov in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 (November 11) and defending cup champions and league leaders TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen in the German Cup quarterfinals for a place in the Final Four (November 19).
