Start made to measure for Borussia Düsseldorf against Post SV Mühlhausen
As in the previous season, Borussia Düsseldorf started the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) with a home match against Post SV Mühlhausen. The reigning German champion won the match of the first matchday clearly 3:0.
Borussia Düsseldorf competed on the first matchday of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) without the freshly crowned European champion Dang Qiu and with Timo Boll at position three. Dang Qiu explained why he was not in the squad against Post SV Mühlhausen: "I took a short break after the European Championship, trained little and that's why the other players were the better option today."
The other players then did their thing really well. Anton Källberg had to fight in every set in his match against Daniel Habesohn, but in the end he won clearly 3:0 (11:8, 12:10, 14:12) and provided the first point for the Rhinelanders. Kay Stumper also didn't leave much to be desired in his match against Ovidiu Ionescu. The 19-year-old prevailed against the Romanian in three sets and won 3:1 (11:7, 11:8, 6:11, 12:10).
Duel of the veterans: Boll against Mengel
In the third match, Timo Boll faced Steffen Mengel in a duel between two experienced players. Both played a close and competitive match that went the full distance of five sets. Boll broke away early in the last set, led 7:2, won the set 11:7 and the match 3:2 (11:7, 10:12, 11:5, 9:11, 11:7). Borussia Düsseldorf thus made a perfect start to the new season.
Timo Boll was correspondingly satisfied after the match: "I think we delivered a good opening match for the start of the Bundesliga. Anton was super solid as usual, Kay also did a great job for his first match and withstood the pressure of playing for Borussia. I struggled through with problems in my thigh. Of course, I didn't want to give up and try to win, and fortunately I managed to do that."
Less happy about the course of the game was Mühlhausen's Daniel Habesohn: "After the lineup, we already thought it was quite ok. Especially against Anton I play quite well, but we also know that he plays two classes better here than elsewhere. Ionescu didn't find his way in against Stumper. In the last match Mengel was a bit irritated and icy because Timo was injured and that unfortunately caused him to make a lot of simple mistakes."
