Saarbrücken follows up with action

The 1st FC Saarbrücken TT started the 2023/2024 season of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) with an away success. At the TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt, the Saarlanders prevailed clearly with 3:0 on Matchday 1.

"We will attack again next year": already after the defeat in the Liebherr TTBL final of the previous season and the renewed vice-championship, Patrick Franziska sent a declaration of war to the competition. And the Saarlanders directly followed these words with deeds against TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt at the start of the new season, even though the hosts would have deserved a tighter outcome.

Romain Ruiz and Saarbrücken's newcomer Cedric Meissner fought a hard battle for five sets in the opening singles before the German was able to celebrate the 1:0 lead for his colors. The course was set for the Saarlanders. Afterwards, TTBL debutant Adrien Rassenfosse had to congratulate Europe Top 16 winner Darko Jorgic as well as Benedikt Duda his national team colleague Patrick Franziska. After a bumpy start and a quick 0:2 set deficit, Duda fought his way back into the match, won the third set and was on the verge of winning the fourth set before Franziska managed to prevail in extra time with 14:12.

The voices on the match

Adrian Rassenfosse, TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt: "Of course, the whole team would have liked to do better today, put even more pressure and make the match even tighter. That also applies to my singles match against Darko. But I learned a lot. It was really fun to play here in front of this great crowd. I'll keep at it and try to do better next time."

Cedric Meissner, 1st FC Saarbrücken TT: "The first game of the season is always hard. Especially in a new team. I'm very happy with how it went today. With 1-0 behind you, it's always easier for the team to play."
