Reigning champions Düsseldorf make a successful start to the season against Grünwettersbach
At the start of Timo Boll's final season, the reigning German champions Borussia Düsseldorf welcomed their guests from Grünwettersbach. The Borussia squad included Källberg, Boll and Qiu, the club's top players, who went into the match as clear favorites.
Källberg and Teodoro started things off. After the Borussian, who won silver with Team Sweden at the Olympics, won the first two sets and lived up to his role as favorite, the match turned around. Suddenly the score was 2:2 and it went into the deciding set. However, Källberg was back on top there and went on to win the match 11:1.
Boll made it exciting, but had a successful start to his last season
Boll's first match of his last season also went the full distance. After Walther “gave him a good thrashing” in their last meeting in Grünwettersbach - as Boll described it after the match - today's game was a lot closer. After a back-and-forth in the first four sets, it went to the deciding set, which Boll won 11:9. This gave Düsseldorf a 2:0 lead.
Third singles, third time in the deciding set - Dang Qiu makes a comeback
Dang Qiu and Leo de Nodrest met in the third singles match. The newcomer from ASC Grünwettersbach made it very difficult for the Borussia player and was able to secure the first two sets in extra time. But then the game turned and Qiu caught up - as before, it went to the deciding set. Here, Qiu's comeback continued and he won the match, bringing Borussia its first points of the new season.
“Overall, we are satisfied. Everyone had their struggles with their games. Winning against Ricardo is a good win for me, he gave me a good thrashing in Grünwettersbach 5-6 months ago. Of course, that was still in the back of my mind,” said Boll with a grin after the match.
Borussia travel to Fulda next week on Friday.
