National table tennis player Patrick Franziska is staying with 1. FC Saarbrücken for the long term. The 32-year-old has extended his contract with the Champions League winners of the past two years until 2029. Franziska has been playing for the Saarland club since 2016 and has won the TTBL championship (2020) and the cup (2022) in addition to the European premier league titles.
“FCS is simply my club - I feel very comfortable with everyone in charge and the fans, so it was an easy decision for me to continue playing at Saarland,” said Franziska. Erwin Berg, Sporting Director of 1. FC Saarbrücken, was delighted with the “retirement contract” that the world number eight had signed: “He has long been the face of our club and I am glad that he will continue to be part of the FCS success story.”
This season, however, Saarbrücken is in danger of missing out on the play-offs with captain Franziska. After 16 of 22 match days, last year's finalists are four points behind fourth place, which they need to achieve in order to reach the finals. In the Champions League, FCS is once again in the quarter-finals and will face Hennebont TT from France. The final tournament of the best four teams will take place again in Saarbrücken on May 31.
