Narrow away win for the league leader
With a narrow 3:2 away win, the league leader from Düsseldorf prevents the surprise in Bremen in the end.
It was clear from the start that it would be a long evening at SV Werder Bremen. Without the two cup finalists Anton Källberg and the individual European champion Dang Qiu, only Timo Boll was back at the plate after the cup final on Sunday. At his side, team vice world champion Kay Stumper and the veteran from India Sharath Kamal Achanta. The latter lost clearly in the first game against the double world champion from Sweden Mattias Falck. After the two national players Stumper and Boll were able to re-establish the 2-1 lead for the Borussians with victories, it was again Falck who showed the young German his limits. In the final doubles, however, the young Bremen players Kirill Gerassimenko and Cristian Pletea faced the full experience and experience in the form of Timo Boll and Sharath Kamal Achanta, who then also prevailed in the end.
Timo Boll admitted in an interview after the end of the match: "I was surprised how flexible and strong he (Pletea) played. It was a monster start, I was overrun. In the end it wasn't a commanding victory, that was a lot of mental work." Boll was also still struggling with the conditions and his own body, especially after Sunday's cup final: "Since Sunday I haven't played any table tennis, only physio, sauna and rehab. I'm not injured, but had a hangover accordingly. Also the change of material was not easy, we were now very used to the Nittaku balls, that is then already a difference."
The doubles world champion from Sweden did not lose a set
Mattias Falck won both singles with a 3:0 score, and thus enabled the final doubles match in which everything was possible for SV Werder Bremen. But both Kirill Gerassimenko from Kazakhstan and Cristian Pletea from Romania, who had already lost both their singles with 1:3, could not make the home victory perfect in spite of a good performance and full physical effort. The match did not change anything in the standings for either team, but a win would still have been important for the self-confidence of the young Bremen team.
The 13th matchday in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) continues on Thursday. Then the promoted team from Mainz travels to ASV Grünwettersbach. The other matches will take place on Friday and Sunday. All matches will be broadcast live on the Spontent channels on Twitch.
