Grenzau with third victory in a row

Grenzau with third victory in a row

TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau continues to make up ground in the relegation battle. At the end of the 16th match day in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL), they defeated play-off candidate TSV Bad Königshofen. For the Westerwald team, it was the third win in a row.

In the end it was a clear thing: Yi-Hsin Feng had six match points against Bastian Steger. With the third one, he not only decided his duel against the former German national player, but also the match between TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau and TSV Bad Königshofen in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) for his team. But it was a long way for the hosts to get there.

At the beginning, Feng started like a fire department and did not let his first opponent Filip Zeljko get into the match. He won the first set 11:5 and was already leading 7:2 in the second before the Croatian got into the match better. He stole the second set from the Taiwanese, but could not take the momentum into the third and missed a five-point lead in the fourth set. With two close set wins, Feng put Grenzau in the lead for the first time.

Bastian Steger evens for Bad Königshofen

The following duel of the two former national players Patrick Baum and Bastian Steger Steger took the lead twice, twice Baum equalized. But in the fifth set Steger ignited the turbo once more and won it 11:5. Also the duel between Maciej Kubik and Kilian Ort found its winner only in the fifth set. Kubik missed two match points in the fourth set and Ort saved himself for the deciding set. Here it was the player from Lower Franconia who missed four match points. So the Pole used match point number three to put Grenzau in the lead again.

Bad Königshofen has already had to play the final doubles nine times this season and has been successful seven times. Therefore, Grenzau did not want to risk this last duel. Feng lost the first set against Steger with 6:11, but then he got better and better into the match and won the next three sets. He led his team to the overall victory with two singles wins. After both TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt and 1. FSV Mainz 05 were able to score on this match day, it was all the more important for Grenzau to win two points in the race to stay in the league.

Patrick Baum with praise for Feng and Kubik

It was a difficult game, said Patrick Baum after the match. He found words of praise for his teammates Feng and Kubik. About his own game he said: "I also played well, but unfortunately I could not win my game. I lacked a bit in the decisive phases."

Already tomorrow, the table tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) continues with the 17th matchday. The class leader Borussia Duesseldorf receives the table last 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the allegedly unequal duel. Grenzau and Bad Königshofen play away against Post SV Mühlhausen (Grenzau) and ASV Grünwettersbach (Bad Königshofen) on Sunday. You can watch all games live on the Spontent channels on Twitch.
