GRENZAU WINS TWO IMPORTANT POINTS IN MAINZ

GRENZAU WINS TWO IMPORTANT POINTS IN MAINZ

On Monday, TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau traveled to Mainz for the fifth matchday of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). There, the visitors were able to win convincingly with a 3:0 victory and gain two important points that put them in seventh place in the table.

Having won one match each in the season so far, Monday evening's match was a very important one for 1. FSV Mainz 05 and TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau to collect more points. The visitors were still without Patrick Baum, meaning that Samuel Walker was back in action and had to face Mainz newcomer Li right at the start.

This first encounter immediately developed into the most exciting match of the evening. It went back and forth over five sets and in the end Walker was able to gain the upper hand and score the first point for his team by winning 11:6 in the fifth set.

Twice 3:0 - clear victories for Grenzau

The next two matches were relatively clear-cut. The Grenzau youngsters Feng and Kubik were able to win against their opponents without losing a set and thus quickly bagged the 3:0 for TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau. Feng won against Sipos with 3:0 (11:5, 11:9, 11:8) and Kubik against Rossi with 3:0 (11:2, 11:5, 11:9).

As a result, Grenzau have now moved into mid-table and are in seventh place with two wins. Mainz remains in tenth place in the table basement - ahead of Fulda, who will be fighting for their first win of the season against TSV Bad Königshofen on Wednesday, October 4.

Comments on the game

Samuel Walker: "It was a very important game for us today. It was a strong team performance. All three of us played well and fought well and ultimately won the important two points. Next week we face Bremen, where we will of course give 100% again."

Felix Schmidt-Arndt (coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05): "The line-up was actually what we'd hoped for, but we weren't able to deliver the performance we'd imagined. We'll have to analyze that very hard now and I'll have to get the boys back on their feet, because we're off to Grünwettersbach again on Friday."
