Grenzau wins at the champion

The TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau celebrates a 3:2 away win at table leader Borussia Düsseldorf on the 15th matchday of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). However, the guests benefited from an injury to Kay Stumper from Düsseldorf.

In the first leg in mid-December, Borussia Düsseldorf had surprisingly lost 3-2 in Grenzau and thus suffered its first defeat of the season. For TTC manager Markus Ströher, however, there is no reason to ask questions about the role of the favorites before the second leg: "In this match, the starting position is always the same. Düsseldorf is the firm favorite. And we'll try to annoy the record champions a little." And the guests succeeded in doing just that, even though the opening match was anything but promising from Grenzau's point of view. With his 100th singles win for the Düsseldorf team, the Swede Anton Källberg put his colors in front against the ex-Borussian Patrick Baum in three quick sets (11:6, 11:3, 11:7).

Yi Hsin Feng times two

The match between Yi Hsin Feng and Kay Stumper was much closer - at least in the first two sets. Stumper, who started the match with a shoulder blade complaint, had to retire before the start of the third set due to his injury. After record European champion Boll had put Borussia back in the lead against Maciej Kubik in three sets (11:6, 11:7, 11:1), Yi Hsin Feng again equalized in the top singles against Anton Källberg. So the doubles had to bring the decision. Since Stumper was unable to play due to injury, coach Danny Heister stepped in alongside Timo Boll. The duo fought back to the best of their ability, but had to congratulate Samuel Walker and Patrick Baum on their victory after four sets.

Comments on the game

Danny Heister, coach Borussia Düsseldorf: "It's a pity that we couldn't decide today's match for us, despite a good effort. We had to struggle with some personnel problems, because Anton as well as Timo and Kay were not completely fit and Dang Qui was unfortunately not even available to us. Nevertheless, in Anton's second match, we had the chance to decide the match for us. Although Anton fought his way back into the match strongly, we are now empty-handed again."

Patrick Baum, TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau: "For us it is of course a great success today, because we need every point in the fight against relegation. Feng delivered a super performance and we were of course lucky that Danny had to step in for Kay. Nevertheless, it was not a foregone conclusion and we can all be very proud and satisfied."
