Grenzau scores at the bottom

TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau celebrated an important away success on Matchday 7 in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). The team from the Westerwald won 3:2 against Mainz 05.

For a trend-setting duel in the bottom of the table, promoted team 1. FSV Mainz 05 received TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau. In other words: bottom of the table against second last. Despite good performances from both teams, both Mainz and Grenzau have slipped down the table in recent weeks. With 2:10 points each, they were two points behind tenth place before Matchday 7.

Muramatsu not to be beaten

The hosts got off to the better start in the person of Yuto Muramatsu, who had Yi-Hsin Feng safely under control in the first singles with 3:0 (11:4, 11:8, 11:6). But the joy of the Mainz players did not last too long. Veteran Patrick Baum equalized the score at 1-1 against Luka Mladenovic, but missed the decision in favor of his colors in his second singles match against Yuto Muramatsu. The Japanese player was unbeatable for the team from Grenzau this afternoon. In the meantime, Maciej Kubik had put the guests in the lead against Andrei Putuntica without losing a set. So the doubles had to decide the match. In this match, Feng / Kubik from Grenzau proved to be the stronger against Mladenovic / Putuntica.

"We have bitten our way through"

"It was the expected exciting game," said Grenzaus Patrick Baum. "My plan against Mladenovic worked out well. I made the right decisions in the decisive moments. As a team we fought through and also deserved to win. Against Muramatsu it was difficult for me. He's very confident and doesn't make many easy mistakes. I could hardly get through against his defense."

"Unfortunately, we lost 3-2 today," said a disappointed Tomasz Kasica, coach of Mainz. "We had good opportunities, but in the end it wasn't enough. Overall, we deserved to go home as losers. But we will get our chances to take points again as well."
