Grenzau cracks Düsseldorf
TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau inflicts the first defeat on Borussia Düsseldorf in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). On the 10th matchday, the hosts won 3:2 against the record champion.
Before the match, Grenzau's manager Markus Ströher praised Düsseldorf's performance this season as "impressive". "This team is seemingly unbeatable at the moment. But that doesn't make this home game any less interesting. Maybe we can annoy the class leader a little bit." And the Grenzauer were indeed able to do that. Düsseldorf, which traveled without Timo Boll and Anton Källberg, conceded its first defeat of the season in the Westerwald, but remains the league leader. Grenzau, on the other hand, collected important points in the fight against relegation.
Premiere for Stumper and Qiu
In the first singles match of the day, Maciej Kubik inflicted his first defeat of the season on national player Kay Stumper in four sets (11:5, 11:7, 12:14, 11:6). The Pole failed to convert five match points in the third set, but did not let this put him out of his stride in set four. Dang Qiu suffered the same fate as Stumper immediately afterwards: the European champion also lost his first singles match of the season against Samuel Walker. But Borussia did not give up yet and fought their way into the decisive doubles match after Sharath Kamal Achanta won against Patrick Baum and Dang Qiu against Maciej Kubik. Here, however, the journey of the defending champions ended, as Samuel Walker and Patrick Baum defeated Kay Stumper and Sharath Kamal Achanta in four sets (11:7, 11:5, 14:16, 11:7).
Compliments to Grenzau
"That was a nice victory for us today," Grenzau's Patrick Baum was pleased. "Even though it was perhaps not necessarily to be expected. But everyone fought super and in the end it was fortunately enough in the doubles."
Düsseldorf's Dang Qui saw a deserved winner in Grenzau: "Compliments for this victory. They played excellent and were super hot in every game. The defeat hurts now, of course, but we've built up a good cushion in the league. We want to finish our good first half with another good game against Bergneustadt on Wednesday."
