Grenzau collects important points in the relegation battle
With a fighting performance, the TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau earned important points in the fight to stay in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL). The Westerwald team defeated ASV Grünwettersbach 3:2. Thus they turn the result of the first round.
In the end, it went fast. Samuel Walker and Patrick Baum did not let Ricardo Walther and Deni Kozul get into the match in the doubles. They defeated the duo 3:0 and thus secured the fourth win of the season for TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau on the 14th matchday of the Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL). ASV Grünwettersbach, on the other hand, failed to break free from the relegation zone.
However, it was a long way until that point was reached. Yi-Hsin Feng kept Grenzau in the game with two singles wins. First he defeated Xi Wang in five sets, and later Tiago Apolonia with the same result. Against Apolonia he had to turn around a 0:2 set deficit. In sets three and four, the Portuguese was still close to victory. In each case, he lost in extra time of the set. In the decisive set, however, the air was out. Feng won clearly with 11:1.
Apolonia and Walther put Grünwettersbach in the lead
In his first singles match, Apolonia also had to go the full distance of five sets. And here too, the Portuguese player was already leading 2:0. Patrick Baum fought his way back, but in the decisive set it was Apolonia who won 11:9. He equalized the score at 1:1.
Ricardo Walther then took the lead in the meantime. He defeated Samuel Walker 3:0. The Englishman was close to winning the first two sets. In the end, however, he lost clearly. Grünwettersbach took a 2-1 lead and looked like a sure winner when Apolonia took a 2-0 set lead against Yi-Hsin Feng before losing the match. ASV manager Martin Werner spoke afterwards of a bitter defeat. "We must not give the match out of hand. Accordingly, I am disappointed today."
All six games of the 14th matchday will take place this Sunday. Matchday 15 begins next Friday with TSV Bad Königshofen playing away at SV Werder Bremen.
