European champion Dang Qiu extends contract until 2027

Borussia Düsseldorf has succeeded in retaining world number 14 Dang Qiu and extending his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, on a long-term basis. The reigning European champion signed a new contract for three years until 30 June 2027.

The 27-year-old German international joined the record-breaking champions on the Rhine from ASV Grünwettersbach in the summer of 2021 and has developed into a world-class player with a regular place in the top 15 of the international rankings. Since then, he has triumphed in the singles at the European Championships and won silver with the national team at the World Championships and two gold medals at this year's European Games - with the team and in the mixed with Nina Mittelham. The pair have thus qualified early for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Danny Heister, head coach of Borussia Düsseldorf, is delighted with the contract extension, and not just because Qiu is important for the team: "Dang is incredibly hard-working and disciplined in training. He loves and lives table tennis and is therefore a role model for young athletes. Dang is ambitious and still wants to achieve a lot and I am convinced that he can get even better. I'm looking forward to the next few years with him and to our journey together."

The Penholder player has a similar view: "I'm delighted that I can extend my partnership with Borussia. It's simply the right club for me. I can constantly improve my game here and make the right adjustments to further establish myself among the world's best. And of course I want to build on the successful seasons of the last few years and continue to experience wonderful moments with Borussia and hopefully celebrate many great titles."

The reigning team runner-up has an outstanding record in the Borussia jersey. 58 victories in the singles compared to just ten defeats in the Bundesliga, cup and Champions League. In 2022 and 2023, he celebrated the German team championship with Timo Boll, Anton Källberg, Kay Stumper and Kamal Achanta - the first two championship titles of his career, and they also reached the Champions League and Cup final together.

Düsseldorf manager Andreas Preuß is certain that the club's success story will continue with Dang Qiu. "Dang has developed into a top international player in the last two years and has played a big part in our successes during this time. He is our future and will lead our team in the coming years."
