Emotional showdown at the Liebherr TTBL Final 2025: Ochsenhausen challenges Düsseldorf in Boll's farewell match

The German Table Tennis League (TTBL) is ready for the showdown and a memorable Liebherr TTBL final: Borussia Düsseldorf and TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen will battle it out for the German championship on June 15 in Frankfurt, providing Timo Boll with the stage for the last match of his unique career. Numerous sporting legends will mingle with the 4,000 fans in the almost sold-out Süwag Energie ARENA.

The conditions are masterful: an almost sold-out Süwag Energie ARENA, world-class sport - and a farewell that will write table tennis history. After four titles in a row, Borussia Düsseldorf would like to add another chapter to its success story and celebrate the 35th German championship in the club's history; for Timo Boll, it would be the crowning glory of his title-rich career.

In 1996, Boll made his debut in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) as a 15-year-old, and two years later he became German singles champion for the first time. It took him until 2009 to win his first TTBL championship, followed by many more since then - on June 15, Boll will now set his sights on his 15th German team championship in the last match of his career. And various sporting legends and celebrities have announced their attendance for the farewell, including Dirk Nowitzki, who will be present in the Süwag Energie ARENA on Sunday. After his active career, as Boll announced a few years ago, he is planning a longer vacation with the former NBA superstar and close friend. “I hope we and Timo can give each other the perfect farewell,” says Düsseldorf's Dang Qiu.

Ochsenhausen aim for the third double in the club's history

However, Boll and Borussia should not be too sure of the title. After all, there is also TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen: In January, the Swabians had already secured the German Table Tennis Cup in the Liebherr Cup Final Four. A triumph in the Liebherr TTBL Final is now set to be the third double in the club's history after 2004 and 2019. With Hugo Calderano, who recently reached a career highlight with silver in the singles at the World Championships, as well as Simon Gauzy and Shunsuke Togami, Ochsenhausen is sending three top players into the race. Calderano and Gauzy are leaving the club at the end of the season and, like Boll, are now looking for a golden farewell. Düsseldorf will counter with Boll and Qiu as well as Anton Källberg.

The two finalists went head-to-head in the TTBL main round. Düsseldorf and Ochsenhausen finished level on points with 32:12 each, while Borussia secured first place thanks to the better match ratio. However, the TTF always had the upper hand in the head-to-head duels. “We've always managed to be in a particularly good mood on day X and take the overall victory,” says Qiu. “I think it will have to be a cohesive team performance.” Ochsenhausen's Gauzy says: "If we play like we have recently, it will be difficult for Düsseldorf. However, we also have a tough opponent waiting for us."

Record attendance of 4,000 fans in the Süwag Energie ARENA

These conditions naturally electrify the entire table tennis world: in view of the exploding demand for tickets, the TTBL has had to increase capacity several times. Around 4,000 spectators will come to Frankfurt on Sunday, setting a new record for the Liebherr TTBL final. Thousands more will follow the event live on TTBL media partner Dyn.
Frankfurt is ready for the big farewell and a final for the ages.
