Düsseldorf wins top match
On the first matchday of the new season in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL), champions Borussia Düsseldorf and TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen met as two title contenders. With the better end for the hosts. Borussia won with 3:1.
While the team from Düsseldorf will go into the new round unchanged and with Timo Boll, Dang Qiu, Anton Källberg and Kay Stumper can once again be considered the big title favorites, Ochsenhausen has landed the big transfer coup of the summer. The Upper Swabians brought Hugo Calderano back to the TTBL. Against Borussia, however, the guests had to do without their Brazilian.
But even without Calderano, this top match lived up to its name from the first rally. Anton Källberg and Samuel Kulczycki fought a duel on equal terms in the opening singles, which the Swede could only win in the fifth set. Kulczycki fought back deep into extra time in the fourth and fifth sets.
Can Akkuzu scores for Ochsenhausen
The match between Dang Qui and Alvaro Robles was much more one-sided. The European Champion dominated his opponent over three sets and thus ensured a reassuring lead for the hosts. But the match was not yet decided: Can Akkuzu breathed new hope into the Ochsenhausen team thanks to a hard-fought 3:2 against Timo Boll. However, this did not last too long. Today's indomitable Anton Källberg kept his nerve and never gave Alvaro Robles a chance to win a set.
Quotes on the match
Anton Källberg, Borussia Düsseldorf: "Yes, I'm really happy that we won. I didn't intend to make it so exciting. In the beginning I made a lot of mistakes, but Kulczycki also surprised me a lot sometimes, he played excellent. Fortunately, things went better in the second match, I was more confident and I'm happy about the victory."
Can Akkuzu, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen: "It was a very exciting match with some spectacular rallies. For me, of course, it was also special. We gave our best and were much better than the last time we were here. We'll keep working hard and do even better next time."
