Düsseldorf solves quarterfinal ticket in Hilpoltstein

Borussia Düsseldorf is the second team to enter the quarterfinals of the German Table Tennis Cup. As expected, the record champion left nothing to be desired at TV 1879 Hilpoltstein on Thursday and won 3:0.

The second ticket for the quarterfinals in the German Table Tennis Cup has been awarded: Borussia Düsseldorf did not give TV 1879 Hilpoltstein a chance and won 3:0 on Thursday evening. Thus, the record cup winner is only one victory away from making it to the Final Four again. Last year, Düsseldorf lost 1:3 to 1. FC Saarbrücken TT in the Liebherr Cup final.

On Thursday, nerves of steel also made the difference in favor of the guests. Here and there Hilpoltstein sniffed at smaller opportunities to initiate a surprise: Andy Pereira squandered several set points against Timo Boll in the second set, Petr Fedotov even gave away a 7:2 lead in the second set. In the end, first Boll won 3:0 (11:5, 12:10, 11:6), then Källberg 3:1 (11:5, 12:10, 8:11, 11:7). The third point was finally contributed after the break by Dang Qiu, who used his second match point against Alexander Flemming to win 3:1 (11:8, 11:8, 10:12, 12:10).

Five more round of 16 matches on Friday night

"I'm glad that the thigh held," Timo Boll said after the match in the sold-out Hilpoltstein Stadthalle. "I knew that Pereira is not an easy opponent and accordingly I am satisfied that I won the match after my injury break." Borussia coach Danny Heister noted, "Of course, a win against a second-division team is mandatory for us. But even these games have to be won first. It was close in many places. But the guys felt challenged by the great atmosphere and did a good job."

Already on Friday evening the German Table Tennis Cup continues with five more round of 16 matches. Among others, the matches between 1. FC Saarbrücken TT and TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt as well as between TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and TSV Bad Königshofen will take place. Finally, the last quarterfinal ticket will be awarded on Saturday between ASV Grünwettersbach and 1. FSV Mainz 05.
