Düsseldorf prevails in wafer-thin TTBL Clásico
It was the kind of game you would expect from the rematch of this year's Liebherr-TTBL final: Hotly contested matches with a terrific atmosphere. Then as now, the winner was Borussia Düsseldorf. In the match against 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT, they prevailed 3:2. Also because Timo Boll turned the game around in what was possibly his last TTBL appearance in the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle after trailing 1:2.
It was already clear before the match that both Saarbrücken and Düsseldorf were eagerly awaiting the TTBL classic. Nevertheless, the two teams were in very different positions. While Borussia had only lost the match against Fulda, who reside in first place, FCS ranked in the middle of the league with a 4:4 record. The aim in Saarbrücken's Joachim-Deckarm-Halle was therefore to change that. And indeed, the fighting spirit of the runners-up was evident throughout. Although Darko Jorgic had to concede defeat to Anton Källberg in the opening match, the game went straight into the fifth set (11:4, 4:11, 6:11, 11:9, 8:11).
Clear number for Patrick Franziska
What followed was a classic within a classic: Timo Boll against Patrick Franziska. Socialized in the same club at TSV 1875 Höchst, both have known each other for decades and have competed against each other countless times. This time the match went clearly to the younger player: Franziska beat Boll 3:0 to level the score at 1:1 - before Eduard Ionescu's 3:0 win over Kay Stumper even put the Saarbrücken team ahead for a while.
Final double closes the bag for Düsseldorf
Timo Boll quickly put his defeat in the first game behind him. He won 3:1 against Darko Jorgic, paving the way for the final doubles match between Franziska/Meissner and Källberg/Haug. After a further three sets in favor of the Düsseldorfers, Borussia scored the winning point to win the rematch of the final. “It was a bit of luck,” said Källberg after the final double. Borussia is now looking to catch up with the teams from Bremen and Fulda, who are still unbeaten at the top of the table. All TTBL matches will be broadcast live and exclusively on Dyn.
