Düsseldorf despite injury worries
Defending champion Borussia Düsseldorf remains undefeated at the top of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). The record champion won 3:1 at TSV Bad Königshofen on Matchday 7 and did not let injury worries stop them.
With Bad Königshofen and Borussia Düsseldorf, two in-form teams met directly on Matchday 7. While the hosts celebrated three victories in their last four games, most recently a 3:1 win in Saarbrücken, the record champions traveled to Lower Franconia with the recommendation of six 3:0 victories in a row. Both Kay Stumper and Dang Qiu had to miss the game with back problems, and Anton Källberg, who had just recovered from a cold, was not at full strength. Without further ado, trainer Danny Heister moved into the line-up of the defending champions and was allowed to take to the table directly in the first singles match of the afternoon, but was without a real chance to win a set against Bastian Steger.
Match points on both sides
The equalizer for Borussia came from record European champion Timo Boll in a thrilling match against Yukiya Uda. Internationally, the player from Düsseldorf had lost to the Japanese player just over half a year ago. Today, after a high-class match, he was able to win in the extra time of the fifth set, after he had already missed a match point in the fourth set and had fended off later match points against him.
With that, the hosts had shot their powder. Anton Källberg and again Timo Boll did not give up another set against Filip Zeljko and Bastian Steger. Borussia Düsseldorf lost its first singles match of the season, but remains unbeaten at the top of the table. "That was a great performance by Anton," praised Düsseldorf coach Danny Heister. "He knew he had to win this match and he did a great job." Timo Boll was also full of praise for his team in view of the circumstances: "Of course, we had enormous pressure in all matches today. But we confirmed our current good form. We are very happy to be able to take the points."
