Close, closer, Werder Bremen

Close, closer, Werder Bremen

SV Werder Bremen celebrated a 3:1 away win at Post SV Mühlhausen on the 16th matchday of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) and still has the play-offs in sight. The Swede Mattias Falck shone as in the first leg with two singles wins for the North Germans.

When 11 out of 17 sets are won with a difference of only two points, this speaks for the balance of a match. This is what happened between Mulhouse and Bremen. In the very first singles match of the day, Daniel Habesohn and Kirill Gerassimenko went the full distance in all five rounds. It took four overtimes and a total of eleven match points before the Bremen player was the winner. Curiously, while the Kazakh made the most of his first match point, Habesohn missed 10 of them - in words: ten.

Matchwinner Falck

Bremen's Mattias Falck then had his moment: the European doubles champion found little to do against Irvin Bertrand in the first two sets, but improved as the match progressed and won - how could it be otherwise - in extra time in the fifth set. After Ovidiu Ionescu had brought the hosts back to 1:2 against Christian Pletea, it was up to Mattias Falck to seal the away win for his colors with his second singles victory. Daniel Habesohn improved from set to set after some initial difficulties, but finally lost to the Swede in three sets.

Comments on the match

Steffen Mengel, Post SV Mühlhausen: "Unfortunately I couldn't play today because I injured my shoulder against Fulda. I am on the way to recovery, but playing today was not possible. Bremen is currently in outstanding form. However, I've rarely seen games go so badly. We were down 0:2 and nobody really knew why. But that's how it goes sometimes. Congratulations to Bremen."
