Bremen stops Saarbrücken's series
First defeat of the season for 1. FC Saarbrücken TT in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). The Saarland team lost 3-1 away to SV Werder Bremen on matchday 10, but maintained second place in the table. With this victory, Bremen consolidated their second place.
The people of Bremen don't have particularly good memories of the most recent meeting between the two clubs. A good three weeks ago, SV Werder and 1. FC Saarbrücken TT faced each other in the cup quarter-finals. Final score back then: 3-0 for the Saarlanders. So today was the chance for revenge. And the North Germans knew how to use this against weakened Saarbrücken players. National player Patrick Franziska had to miss the game at short notice due to illness.
Matchwinner Mattias Falck
It started with Bremen's number one Mattias Falck, who defeated Saarbrücken's Cedric Meissner in three tight sets and put his colors in the lead. But the favorite immediately struck back in the person of Darko Jorgic. The Europe Top 16 winner had little trouble with Christian Pletea and never let the Romanian come close to winning a set. The game was open again. Kirill Gerassimenko, who also only needed three sets, took the green-white lead again but had to fend off a total of two set points against Cedric Nuytinck. The overall victory for Bremen was bagged by Mattias Falck in the top singles of the afternoon, who was able to turn a 0:2 set deficit into an 11:6 in the deciding set against Darko Jorgic, who was still unbeaten this season.
Voices about the game
Cristian Tamas, coach SV Werder Bremen: “There is no better way to celebrate a victory: in front of such a great backdrop in a full hall. The spectators pushed us the whole time. Mattias had stomach problems since yesterday and it wasn't clear for a long time whether he would be able to play at all today. He fought through and got the win for us. Respect!"
Cedric Meissner, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT: “Ultimately, two or three points in each set made the difference in my singles. I definitely had my chances, but I couldn't take advantage of them. If I had been able to get one of my leads through, the game might turn out completely differently.”
