Bremen get third season's win against Fulda
SV Werder Bremen recovered well from their first defeat of the season to win 3-0 against TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell on Matchday 4 of the Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL).
SV Werder Bremen remains the team of the hour in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). After the Hanseatic League only managed a total of three victories in the first half of last season, they are already at the same level in the new round after the 4th match day. Ten days after the 0:3 at Borussia Düsseldorf, Bremen celebrated a 3:0 against TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell on Monday evening and now stands at 6:2 points. Fulda, on the other hand, hoped in vain for their second win of the season and find themselves at the bottom of the table for the time being with 2:6 points.
The deciding factor in the match was Marcelo Aguirre's break: the Paraguayan was initially down 1-2 sets against Quadri Aruna, but then fought back impressively. In the fourth set, Aguirre was clearly in front and stopped Aruna's comeback at 7:6 with a time-out. The 29-year-old then scored point after point and celebrated each one with loud cheers. With the score at 11:7, the match went into the fifth set, which was initially completely open. But then Aguirre pulled away at 7:7, booked two match points at 10:8 and finally won 3:2 (11:8, 7:11, 7:11, 11:7, 11:8).
Kirill Gerassimenko leaves Ruwen Filus no chance
"Marcelo played fantastic. He controlled Quadri's forehand well," praised Aguirre's teammate Mattias Falck in an interview in the livestream on Twitch after the match. The doubles world champion from Sweden had previously provided the first point for the Bremen team. Against Alexandre Cassin, Falck won 3:0 (11:3, 11:5, 11:4). "I think I lost to him three times in a row before," Falck said afterwards. "Today I played very well and made few mistakes. I put a lot of pressure on him from the start, so of course I'm very happy with my game." Point number three finally went to the account of Kirill Gerassimenko. With his usual spectacular play he gave Ruwen Filus, who had won the WTT-Contender in Almaty the day before, no chance and won 3:0 (11:9, 11:6, 11:5).
"We all played at a very high level today. To beat Fulda so clearly is not that easy," Aguirre said. "This win gives us confidence for the next games." Before both teams head into the World Cup break, they each have one more match in the German Table Tennis Cup later in the week. Bremen will host TTC Neu-Ulm next Friday, September 23, starting at 7 p.m., while Fulda will play TTC Fortuna Passau at the same time. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals. In the TTBL, both teams are then challenged again on November 6. "We will continue to work hard and give everything to get back to winning in the next games. There are still plenty of chances for points," said Aruna.
