In the Liebherr TTBL-Finals on June 30, Borussia Düsseldorf and 1. FC Saarbrücken TT will battle it out for the championship in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) - it's another title decider between the two teams, who have played numerous great matches in recent years. We take a look back at seven legendary duels between Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken.
09.02.2010, TTBL: 1. FC Saarbrücken TT - Borussia Düsseldorf 3:1
Since the 2009/10 season, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT has been playing in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) - which was still called DTTL at the time - and the FCS managed a win against the record champions in its very first season. Andrej Gacina (3:2 against Trinko Keen, 3:2 against Seiya Kishikawa) and Bojan Tokic (3:2 against Christian Süß) ensured Saarbrücken's 3:1 victory against Düsseldorf in February 2010. Kishikawa scored for Borussia (3:2 against Jiri Vrablik). Düsseldorf ended up as champions, while Saarbrücken had a strong debut season with fifth place. Incidentally, the FCS moved to the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle, where the Saarland team still plays its home games today, when it switched to the DTTL.
18.12.2020, TTCLM-Finals: Borussia Düsseldorf - 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 3:1
28 matches in just 8 days: The 2020/21 Champions League (TTLCM) season was a very special one, as it was held as a bubble event at Borussia Düsseldorf due to the coronavirus pandemic. And the hosts used the home advantage to end a title drought of more than two years. In the final against Saarbrücken, Anton Källberg was the match winner with two singles victories (3:1 against Patrick Franziska, 3:2 against Shang Kun), Timo Boll (3:2 against Shang) also scored points - for the Düsseldorf superstar it was his 25th and thus an anniversary title in the Borussia jersey.
06.06.2021, Liebherr TTBL-Finals: 1. FC Saarbrücken TT - Borussia Düsseldorf 1:3
Almost six months after winning the TTCLM title, Borussia Düsseldorf also prevailed against Saarbrücken in the Liebherr TTBL final and finally celebrated the fourth triple in the club's history. Once again, Källberg (3:1 against Franziska, 3:1 against Darko Jorgic) and Boll (3:1 against Shang) ensured the 3:1 victory for their team. Incidentally, the Liebherr TTBL final was played for the first time as part of the multi-sport event "The Finals", so the venue was the Helmut-Körnig-Halle in Dortmund.
08.01.2022, Liebherr Cup Finals: Borussia Düsseldorf - 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 1:3
Ten years after the first cup win in the club's history, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT repeated the coup: FCS celebrated a 3:1 win over Düsseldorf in the 2022 Liebherr Cup final. Franziska (3:1 against Karlsson, 3:1 against Källberg) and Jorgic (3:2 against Källberg) ensured Saarbrücken's fourth title win in all competitions. It had previously taken a feat of strength in the semi-final: Saarbrücken were already on the brink of elimination against Post SV Mühlhausen (Franziska: "We already had one and a half legs on the bus"), but saved themselves in the doubles and eventually won 3:2. They had also beaten Düsseldorf in their first cup win: In the quarter-finals of the 2011/12 season, Saarbrücken won 3:1 against Borussia, and in the final there was a 3:1 win against SV Plüderhausen.
11.06.2022, Liebherr TTBL-Finals: Borussia Düsseldorf - 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 3:2
Kristian Karlsson played for Borussia Düsseldorf for a total of six years and said goodbye at the end of the 2021/22 season with his tenth title in a Borussia jersey. The record champions were 2-1 down at one point, but Källberg saved them with a win against Franziska in the doubles - and that's where Karlsson's time finally came. Alongside Dang Qiu, the Swede secured Borussia's 32nd German championship.
03.04.2023, TTCLM Finals: Borussia Düsseldorf - 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 2:3
For 1. FC Saarbrücken TT, it is possibly the biggest match in the club's history to date: After a 2:3 in the first leg, the Saarlanders competed in the second leg at the ARAG Center Court - and pulled off the big sensation. Two singles wins by Franziska (3:2 against Källberg, 3:2 against Qiu) and one by Jorgic (3:1 against Källberg) took the FCS into the golden match, where Franziska and Jorgic once again held their nerve. In the end, Saarbrücken was able to celebrate the first TTCLM victory in the club's history. Incidentally, it was also a historic season for the TTBL: for the first time, four teams from the Bundesliga reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
01.04.2024, TTCLM Finals: Borussia Düsseldorf - 1. FC Saarbrücken TT 2:3
After last year's title, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT repeated the coup in the TTCLM this season, and once again it was dramatic. As hosts of the event, which was held as a Final Four for the first time, FCS celebrated another 3:2 against their long-standing rivals in front of 2450 fans. After Jorgic's decisive 3:2 against Källberg, "The train has no brakes" resounded through the euphoric Saarlandhalle. Jorgic had already won against Qiu (3:1), and Franziska also prevailed against Källberg (3:0). Jorgic was not the only one to describe the match as "unbelievable" afterwards.
