Borussia Düsseldorf in fast forward
The first home match of the 1st FSV Mainz 05 in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) was quickly over. Against the favored team of Borussia Düsseldorf, the score was 0:3 after 100 minutes.
At the promoted team, they had been looking forward to their first ever home match in the Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL) for weeks. The 1. FSV Mainz 05 received the reigning German champion on the second match day as a Bundesliga newcomer. And just as the duel sounds - promoted team against German champion - it also went. Borussia Düsseldorf needed less than two hours to clarify the balance of power.
The Rhinelanders competed in Mainz without Timo Boll, but the 41-year-old was a worthy substitute. For Boll, who has problems with his thigh, the newly crowned European singles champion Dang Qiu moved into the team, who had still been missing on the first match day in the 3-0 win against Post SV Mühlhausen. "I took a short break after the European Championships, trained little and therefore the other players were the better option," Dang Qiu explained his absence a week ago.
The player from Düsseldorf had to face Luka Mladenovic from Mainz, who had a convincing 3-0 win against the reigning African champion Omar Assar (TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt) on the first match day. This time, however, Mladenovic only held his own for two sets. Then Dang Qiu showed his class and won the match 3:1 (12:10, 10:12, 11:7, 11:4). "This was a tactically difficult match," said Düsseldorf's head coach Danny Heister. "Mladenovic has a very unusual style of play with his pimple rubbers. Last week he beat Omar Assar, so that says it all."
Källberg and Stumper secure victory
The match between Andrei Putuntica and Anton Källberg was over even faster. Källberg from Düsseldorf gave Putuntica no chance and decided the match after 18 minutes with 3:0 (11:5, 11:7, 11:5) in his favor.
Instead of Abdullah Talha Yigenler, who played for Mainz on the first day of the match, Carlo Rossi came into action this time. The Italian had to deal with Düsseldorf's Kay Stumper. Stumper played until yesterday at the WTT Feeder in Bulgaria and qualified after his opening win for the round of the best 32 players. There, however, he had to retire after two sets due to a slight cold. In the Bundesliga match things went better for the 19-year-old. Against Rossi, who is almost a year older, Stumper needed four sets before the clear 3:1 (11:8, 11:4, 9:11, 11:7) was established. "Before the match I felt good, but in between I already noticed that I was getting a bit tired. Nevertheless, I am quite satisfied with my performance," concluded the 19-year-old.
