Borussia Düsseldorf dominates summit meeting
Defending champion Borussia Düsseldorf wins the top match of Matchday 5 in the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) 3:0 against TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen. With now 10:0 points, the record champion is undefeated at the top of the table.
Düsseldorf's coach Danny Heister relied on European champion Dang Qiu, Kay Stumper and Timo Boll against Ochsenhausen. The Swede Anton Källberg took a seat on the bench. After Dang Qui had taken the lead against Can Akkuzu, Kay Stumper's second singles match against Alvaro Robles was a clear 3:0 success. At 2:0 and 10:9 the player from Düsseldorf had match point, but could not use it. Robles won sets three and four before Stumper won the deciding set again.
Finally, Timo Boll completed the victory for Düsseldorf against Samuel Kulczycki. After trailing 6:10 in the first set, the record European champion managed to win the set 12:10 and then dominated sets two and three.
"We knew it was going to be tough"
"I'm very happy about my win and that we were able to win 3-0 today," said Düsseldorf's Kay Stumper. "Unfortunately, I missed my match point in the third set and let him come back into the match. Then in the fifth set I really fought my way back in and luckily I was able to win it quite clearly."
Samuel Kulczycki, on the other hand, had his doubts about his team's performance after the match: "We wanted to put in our best performance and knew that it would be difficult here in Düsseldorf. I think we could have all done even better, but now we're looking forward to the next few days with confidence. We will prepare well for the cup game against Grenzau and we want to get into the play-offs."
