Bergneustadt scores against Düsseldorf
TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt, recently still plagued by relegation worries, presented itself in top form on match day 14 of the German Table Tennis League (TTBL) and won 3:2 against Borussia Düsseldorf. This is Borussia's third defeat in a row, while Bergneustadt can celebrate its fifth win from the last six games.
Ruiz and Duda put the TTC in the lead
In the opening singles match, Frenchman Romain Ruiz from TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt prevailed 3:1 in a hard-fought match against Düsseldorf's Dang Qiu. Despite losing the first set by a narrow margin, Ruiz kept his nerve and ultimately won 3:1 (8:11, 11:8, 11:7, 11:5). He surprised Qiu time and again with his service game and the subsequent hardness of his forehand topspin.
The match between Benedikt Duda and Anton Källberg developed into a real thriller. After losing the first set, Duda fought back and eventually won the match 3:2. The decisive fifth set in particular demanded everything from both players. After trailing 6-9, Duda repeatedly managed to force Källberg into easy mistakes. After winning five points in a row, Duda finally retained the upper hand and gave Bergneustadt a 2-0 lead against the record champions from Düsseldorf.
Stumper initiates the turnaround
In the third singles match, Düsseldorf's Kay Stumper dominated against Adrien Rassenfosse. As in the first leg, Stumper won 3:0 to give Borussia the important point (12:14, 7:11, 6:11).
The first set of the fourth game began with an impressive performance from Ruiz, who took a clear 11-2 lead against Källberg. However, Källberg was not intimidated by this and countered with three clear sets (11:2, 6:11, 6:11, 5:11).
The final decider between TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt and Borussia Düsseldorf took place in the doubles, when Adrien Rassenfosse and Benedikt Duda faced the doubles pairing of Dang Qiu and Kay Stumper. The left-right combination from Bergneustadt narrowly prevailed in the first set and also retained the upper hand in sets two and three (13:11, 11:8, 11:8).
With this convincing double victory, TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt successfully ended the duel with Borussia Düsseldorf 3-2 and thus consolidated fourth place in the table. Borussia has to hand over the lead to 1.FS Saarbrücken TT for the time being and slips to second place.
Comments:
Benedikt Duda (TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt): "We're super happy now and didn't really expect to take two points today. My doubles match with Adrien went very well. We've already scored against Ochsenhausen and get on very well. We played superbly and deserved to win. Now we'll celebrate a bit with the fans and tomorrow we'll go back to Düsseldorf for the training course for the World Championships."
Kay Stumper (Borussia Düsseldorf): "It was a very exhausting game. The atmosphere in Bergneustadt was unbelievably good. Of course it was annoying to lose today. We missed chances in the first two games. The last three defeats were all very close. We now have to make sure we win our games again to continue to establish ourselves in the play-offs."
The last match of the 14th matchday of the TTBL will take place on Monday, February 5 at 7 p.m. between SV Werder Bremen and Post SV Mühlhausen.
