Bad Königshofen also beats Bremen
TSV Bad Königshofen also defeated the top team from Bremen after beating 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT. The club from Lower Franconia took the points from the north with few expectations and without their leading wolf.
Although the now 43-year-old Bastian Steger had traveled to his old place of work, he was unable to swing the racket himself due to an injury. “Bastian got stuck on the edge of the table during training and broke a finger. He can't hold the racket,” said TSV managing director Matthias Braun in an interview with TV Mainfranken ahead of the match.
Ueda opens, Gerassimenko equalizes
The Japanese player in TSV kit won the first two sets relatively easily (11:2, 11:7). However, Falck was not yet beaten and played the following sets much more evenly. But it was not enough to turn the match around. Kirill Gerassimenko equalized in three sets against the Croatian Filip Zeljko, who was playing at number one today. The player from Bad Königshöfer did not really get into the match.
Allegro makes it exciting, Falck saves Bremen in the doubles
Steger's retirement also meant that Martin Allegro also had to play in the singles. In Grünwettersbach, the Belgian had not been able to convince against Leo de Nodrest. He played like he was unleashed against Putuntica in the first two sets (11:3, 11:6), but then lost the thread. Sets three and four went to Bremen. Putuntica tried to extend his unbeaten streak this year. In the break before the fifth set, Steger stepped in to coach - with success. Allegro started 6:1, kept motivating himself by shouting loudly and brought the set and the match home in the end.
The fourth singles match between Falck and Zeljko offered pure excitement, even if the first set did not suggest it. The Bremen player won it clearly with 11:3. It didn't seem to be Filip Zeljko's day. The Croatian did not let that get to him and fought back. The following sets were hard-fought. Neither player was able to pull away early on. Two of them went to Bad Königshofen, one to Bremen. In the end, Falck secured the fifth set and set up the final double.
And then it seemed as if Bremen would bag the victory. Gerassimenko/Putuntica narrowly won the first set (12:10) and led 5:1 in the second. The TSV pairing of Ueda/Allegro turned the set and match around and ensured the next coup.
Comments on the game:
Bastian Steger (TSV Bad Königshofen): “I hope that I'll be able to play again this year - despite my broken finger. I'll have to see how the finger feels from day to day. It's difficult to estimate how long it will take before I can hold the racket again. I'm super proud of the team. Jin [Ueda] has made a good start for us. The line-up worked. Anything can happen in doubles. It can go either way. We know we have a good doubles team. In the end, we had the necessary luck on our side. It was a nice feeling for me to come back here to Bremen.”
Christian Tamas (coach SV Werder Bremen): “We were very close to winning the matches in the last few games. Now we've lost three times in the doubles. Today's match came a little too early for us. Nevertheless, the boys threw everything into it, even if they lacked a bit of mental freshness.”
The TTBL continues in quick succession. Tomorrow, Thursday, Zugbrücke Grenzau will host Post SV Mühlhausen at 7 pm. Bad Königshofen travels to Würzburg on Sunday, where champions Düsseldorf await (3:30 pm).
