1. FC Saarbrücken TT ice-cold caught by Zugbrücke Grenzau

The start for the 1st FC Saarbrücken TT in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) has failed. On the first matchday of the new season, the Saarlanders lost 1:3 at TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau.

This is a big surprise. The German runner-up had to admit defeat on the very first matchday of the new season. It did not start well for the 1st FC Saarbrücken TT, because Cedric Nuytinck won the first set against Yi-Hsin Feng, but the Taiwanese player from TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau became stronger afterwards. Feng gained ground, Nuytinck made too many mistakes, gave away three sets in a row and had to admit defeat. Feng won 3:1 (7:11, 11:5, 11:7, 11:6).

In the next match, Patrick Franziska started as the clear favorite, but did not live up to this role. Against 19-year-old Maciej Kubik, Franziska did not play as calmly as he is used to. Although the 30-year-old won the first set against the eleven-year younger Pole, he then turned up the heat. In his first match in the Bundesliga, Kubik took the next three sets from Franziska, who is almost 90 positions higher in the world rankings, and won 3:1 (11:13, 16:14, 11:8, 11:8) to give TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau a 2:0 lead.

Yi-Hsin Feng is the match winner

Tomas Polansky then kept the Saarlanders in the match. The Czech won a hard-fought match against Patrick Baum in four sets with 3:1 (13:11, 8:11, 11:9, 14:12), so that it came to the duel between Grenzau's Yi-Hsin Feng and Saarbrücken's Patrick Franziska. And there it became really exciting. Franziska was already leading with 2:1 sets, then Feng turned the match around, won the last two sets with 11:1 and 11:8 and the match with 3:2 (11:4, 6:11, 4:11, 11:1, 11:8). With that, the surprising victory of Grenzau was under roof - and there was free beer in the hall.

Match winner Yi-Hsin Feng could hardly believe his success: "I am very happy that I could win these two matches. In the first set against Nuytinck I was a bit nervous and made some mistakes. But in the second game I was more active. I still can't believe that I won both matches."
